Good idea

Dave Rapin: Hi Dave. We allow individuals to register indicating the team they are on. We group our individual registrations into teams using Team Recommendations in I/O thus forming teams. For us the number of teams is a better indicator of "total capacity" in a league than the number of individual registrations. For example we can accommodate 36 teams in a given league and once we hit that number the league is full, team wise. For the 36 team league this is nominally 144 curlers however we cannot cap the league at 144 because some will have extra players so we often exceed number of teams x 4. We keep registration open to let teams fill up but we cannot accommodate additional teams at that point. So I suppose perhaps individual and team metrics indicating current numbers and capacity would be helpful. Ron Pelkey (Calgary Curling Club)

Ron Pelkey: What we might be able to do is have a "Max teams" option when creating leagues/competitions that's available when a curler profiles are required. For team registrations (no profile required), the quantity limit suffices.
The only way we can really enforce this limit though is after an admin has created all of the teams (from recommendations, or even ahead of time). Then the team / skip option can become a dropdown during registration so that registrants must now select their team.
To be honest though, I worry this would be pretty niche and misunderstood by clubs. I suspect managers will specify a team limit and just expect that it will work without first creating their teams, leading to confusion and support calls. There's no better way to enforce it either since we can count on curlers to all type their team / sip name identically. (Robert, Bob, Rob, last name, first name, both, typos, etc.)

Dave Rapin: Dave. Yea, I didn't think this through very well. Since the team/skip name is not a unique key there's no way to manage it. As you have indicated having a team/skip (key) in a dropdown will be problematic due to the fact there is no way to edit the key at creation. So you get a bunch of garbage in the system as team names are entered. The other factor is it's actually a combined key of team/skip name AND league, making the data integrity side a dog's breakfast. So I will withdraw my addition to this request. Thanks for dialoguing with me on this. Ron.
